Earliest Recorded Vital Record by First Letter of Surname
HOW THIS TABLE IS ORGANIZED:
Wisconsin vital records were not systematically collected at the county courthouse level until 1907. Earlier records, though haphazard and incomplete, are collectively numerous. The purpose of this data table is to demonstrate the earliest year for which vital records exist. It is organized alphabetically by the first letter of surnames listed. Often, subsequent entries for a particular letter of the alphabet do not appear until much later (for instance, the first and second Death entries within the D section of this table appear 19 years apart). Where a significant gap exists between first and second entries, a date range is reported (for example, 1852/1871 is shown for the death entries within the D section).
If you find records that exist in the era of ancestor's birth or death in the table, you can look for a copy of the record from the Rock County Court House or, for a small fee, by requesting a help from the RCGS library research staff of the RCGS Research Center in Milton, WI.
If you find records do not exist in the era of ancestor's birth or death in the table below, there may be several reasons. Do not assume that there is no record of your ancestor. There are church records, newspaper records and over 50 indexes which can be found in the RCGS Store or you can request research assistance from skilled staff with access to over 200 local history resources at the RCGS Library.
