PROGRAM PRESENTER: Mary Buelow is the Local History and Genealogy specialist at the Hedberg Public Library. She loves digging up interesting stories about Janesville and Rock County history and the families who lived here. Mary has worked in four different libraries over the past four decades, in New York, Washington State, and Wisconsin.
PROGRAM SUMMARY: Mary will share the story of pioneering African American surgeon Dr Daniel Hale Williams, his Janesville connections, his groundbreaking open-heart surgery in 1893, and his efforts to improve medical education and opportunities for African Americans. She will use the stories of Dr Williams and colleague Robert Boyd to illustrate some of the challenges for genealogists researching African American ancestry.
